Ara, a terminally-ill young girl is bedridden and cannot leave her room. The nights are easier for her as the moon gives her comfort and revives her. She reads as much as she can and wants to learn about her Caribbean history and religion. One night a lunar visitor helps her transcend her physical bonds and find the answers she so desperately needs…

ABOUT THE MOON CHILD

The Moon Child is a letter to my three daughters.

During the Black Lives Matter debates (and COVID), we had many conversations with them about slavery, religion and cancer. My partner and I felt it was important to let them know and remind them, that they were free to choose whatever path they wanted spiritually or physically.

The film grew out of these conversations, and what it feels like to be a child in Barbados and the Caribbean, told from the perspective of our main character Ara. We wanted it to feel real, spiritual and anthropological all at the same time. This is conveyed by the documentary elements, ritual and visual effects.

In her own way, Ara is  a symbol of hope and freedom of choice despite the most difficult of circumstances.
